I have lots of links that I've intended to put up on my website, but just haven't gotten around to them yet. Well, here are some of them.
I really depend on the Web for a lot of my news nowadays. Here are some of my favourite news links.
| BBC News | As the BBC consumes more than £100 of my tax money each year in order to provide broadcasting services to Britons, I hope you'll visit and ensure that it continues to do so. |
| CNN | CNN is my main news link to the United States. |
| The Guardian | The Guardian is the newspaper I read each day. I changed from The Times when Rupert Murdoch's book publisher refused to publish Chris Patten's book on Hong Kong in order to curry favour with the Chinese. I haven't regretted the move one bit. Its politics are relatively left of centre, but they pillory both Conservatives and Labour alike. They have been especially good at religious news under Stephen Bates but it remains to be seen whether his successor is as good. |
| The Atlantis Bookshop | Atlantis Bookshop is the oldest occult bookshop in the UK. It is owned and run by a friend whose partner is one of my Lodge brothers, and both are wonderful people and great fun. The bookshop has a large selection of Masonic literature as well as other more occult books. |
There are lots of music sites for streaming audio on the Internet. Here are three of my favourites. I have found that KKSF and WNUA have stopped supplying their feeds to non-US addresses. There is a way around this by using a proxy, and I have invested in one so I can still listen. Music from the Hearts of Space is available to anyone anywhere, and I am a proud paid subscriber. When I decided to change subscription plans, there were problems with payment and their webmaster worked with me to get those problems solved, over email and the telephone. I can't recommend them highly enough.
| KKSF-FM, San Francisco, California | I love smooth jazz; it's great to work by, just laze by, or dream by. KKSF was my favourite radio station when I lived in SF, and I listen often. Note that it's not very Opera-friendly, so you may experience delays if you're not using IE. It will eventually start Media Player and then work just fine. |
| WNUA-FM, Chicago, Illinois | Another smooth jazz station in Chicago--again, my favourite when I lived there. |
| Music from the Hearts of Space | When I lived in Da Bronx, I used to wait up on Friday nights for this show to begin on WNYC. It's a show out of the Bay Area in California that plays an eclectic mix of edgy spacemusic, Celtic music, and just about any other soothing meditation music genre you can think of. The stream is not free, I fear. However, I now can listen each week to that week's show. When I first moved to London, I thought I'd never hear it again except for some of the CDs I'd bought from them. |
Visiting these links regularly is part of my job; they help me keep up with the computer industry.
| The Register | The Register is one of the best sources for industry news. It also boasts the BOFH (Bastard Operator from Hell), which would lend lustre to any website. |
| The Inquirer | This site was founded by a former staff member of the Register. It looks quite similar, but has more cutting-edge hardware and chip information. Click on the picture in the toolbar to the left and get an interesting or wacky new site each day. |
As a new student of Chinese, I have discovered that there are lots of sites promising links to many online resources to help students of Chinese. An interesting fact about these sites is that they always contain an inordinate number of dead links along with many useful lives ones. One reason I can think of for this is that many of these sites are academic ones, and when the owner of the site leaves the academic institution the site is taken down. The other reason could be that people just don't police their link pages very often in the Chinese language world.
| Chinese Characters and Culture | This one is heavy on the history and beauty of Chinese characters. It is sometimes broken so if the link returns a 404 try again later. |
| "DrDo Language Trainer" | I came across the "DrDo Language Trainer" when investigating some of the links in this section. It's a flashcard program that allows the student to enter his or her own language list and create flashcards from it. I am using it now and recommend it highly. |
| Chinese Pronunciation Guide | This one is a Harvard University site that's gotten an award. Their web site has an award shield which says: "This web site has been selected as one of the Net's finest informative and is included in StudyWebTM 's listing of educational links." One would think that an educational link from Harvard might actually be grammatically correct, but nevermind... You'll need RealAudio with this one, but you can hear a good selection of words and phrases to help your pronunciation between classes. |
| Marjorie Chan's Chinese Links | This one is one of a large number of link laundry lists available on the web. However, I've found it very interesting and useful, and hope that you will too. |
| ChineseOn.net | This page has lots of references to the Microsoft add-ons that allow one to input Chinese characters. Once I downloaded and installed this software (free), I could input the Chinese characters in the vocabulary file, and the characters in the banner above. |
| Learning Chinese Online | This site is run from China itself, I believe, and has a large number of resources available. The image of the kitten on the front page is worth the price of the click alone! |
| Online Chinese Tools | This is the place to go for specialised help with Chinese language software. |
| I Love languages | Used to be called the Language Page, it's a resource for almost any language you can think of. The reference above takes you directly to the Chinese page. But, again, watch out for broken links. |
Those of you who've seen my pictures will see that I'm not in the greatest of shapes. However, I'd be even worse if it weren't for my gym, Paris Gym, here in London. It's located beneath Vauxhall Mainline Rail Station in Lambeth, a 20-minutes walk for me from the Elephant. The genial owners, Peter and Phil, preside over a well-equipped weight training gym with a coffee and shake bar, free Internet access, and sauna. They've certainly helped me stay alive for the past five years and I hope to be with them for many years to come. If you're a gay man and are looking for a gym in London, this gym is for you. Tell Peter or Phil (or Sean, their trusty sidekick) that I sent you.
Links to various portions of the lesbian and gay community that I find useful.
| Integrity Lightspeed | Integrity is the lesbian and gay justice ministry of Episcopalians (the U.S. branch of Anglicanism). I have belonged since 1988, even though I'm in the U.K. now. Integrity/Lightspeed is the Internet bounce e-mail list of the organisation, and you can subscribe to it as long as you are a member of Integrity or of other such organisations in other countries. The website, however, is cursed by slow loading time (in contradistinction to its name) and a soundtrack that is fairly ubiquitous. |
| Main Integrity USA page | This is the Integrity USA main page, with links all over the place. Integrity was a major part of my life from 1988-1994 and I am still a member. |
| soc.motss archive | soc.motss is one of the main places I hang out on Usenet. This group is devoted to all things lesbian and gay, but mostly trying to form community among those who post to it and read it. Lately it's been perfused with threads on circumcision, a religious war about operating systems in which Micro$oft is the chief villain, another discussion that turned on whether it was polite to wish "Merry Christmas" to non-Christians in the spirit of the season, and various other polemics. If you have a news reader look for soc.motss. |
| Luti-a Christian lesbian and gay e-mail list | Luti is a lesbian and gay Christian mailing list that was founded by the noted academic and Church personage Dr. Louie Crew, who also founded Integrity (see above). I am now one of two administrators of this list, which is a community of those who are lesbian or gay or who are sympathetic to our cause of justice within the community for us all. If you use the link to e-mail a request for information, we will return information and an application to join. |
| Sven de Rennes | Sven is a very talented cartoonist/artist working out of Rennes, France.![]() |
| Ron's Log | Interesting blog of a former Bostonian who has relocated to Palm Springs, California. Lots of interesting links daily |
| Towleroad | Another interesting blog, with lots of topical and interesting links to other lesbian and gay news sources. A must-read. |
As a software tester, and as a user of software and hardware, I often come across links to interesting sites. Here is one of my favourite software and hardware sites.
| NoteWorthy Composer | There are lots of music composition programs out there. Sibelius is one of the most popular. However, it's quite pricey. NoteWorthy not only allows one to compose directly into the computer, it allows you to convert MIDI files into notated music files you can work with. Not pricey at all, either. |
More links to come as I get to putting them in here with commentary. Naked links aren't as useful as links with commentary.
